The six stars represent the six original provinces of the democratic republic of Congo when it became independent in 1960. The democratic republic of the Congo (DRC) was formerly the "private estate" of the king of Belgium, known as the "free state of the Congo". It gained independence in February 1960 and is called the republic of the Congo with its neighbours. On August 1, 1964, it was renamed the democratic republic of Congo. On October 27, 1971, it was renamed the republic of Zaire. On February 18, 2006, the democratic republic of the Congo adopted a new constitution and changed its flag.
