The national flag of the democratic republic of the Congo is rectangular, with a ratio of 3∶2. The flag is sky blue, with six yellow pentacle stars vertically distributed on the far left and a larger yellow pentacle in the middle. The six stars represent the six original provinces of the democratic republic of Congo when it became independent in 1960. The democratic republic of the Congo (DRC) was formerly the "private estate" of the king of Belgium, known as the "free state of the Congo".
